104 years since establishment of Czechoslovakia |
Bratislava, 28.10.2023 |
|
On October 28, 1918, a democratic republic, Czechoslovakia, was founded on the ruins of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Two days later, on 30th October, Slovaks adopted the so called Martin Declaration of the Slovak Nation, thus formally joining Czechoslovakia. In 1920, the Czechoslovak constitution was adopted. The document granted, for instance, the right to vote to all women and to all men.The establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic meant a radical change for Slovaks. A nation that did not have the right to exist in the Austro-Hungarian Empire turned into an equal state-forming country. The inauguration of Czechoslovakia was commemorated as a remembrance day in Slovakia from its split with the Czech Republic in 1993 until 2020. In November 2020, Slovak MPs passed changes to the Act on state holidays including the one that turned 28th October into a state holiday albeit not a bank holiday.odkaz na stránku |
