Austria produce beer last year as in 2019 |
Vienna, 20.02.2024 |

According to the Austrian Statistical Office, an increase of between three and five percent is currently expected after bottled beer rose in price by an average of 9.4% last year. The brewing industry in Austria has had another successful year. Last year, the country produced 9.98 million hectoliters of beer, roughly as much as in 2019, which preceded the COVID-19 pandemic, and only slightly less than in the exceptional year of 2022, the Austrian Breweries Association announced on Monday. TASR informs about it based on the report of the APA agency.High inflation, however, increased costs and they could be passed on to customers only to a limited extent, said the chairman of the association, Karl Schwarz. In 2020 and 2021, food services and tourism were hit hard by pandemic measures. A strong recovery followed in 2022 and the production of Austrian breweries reached the highest level since the 1990s. Although 2023 was marked by high inflation, Austrians still drank a lot of beer."Given the circumstances, we can be very pleased as an industry indeed," Schwarz concluded when presenting the annual figures. Despite strong demand, the industry is plagued by rising costs, which the association says will remain frozen at a high level at best this year. However, it is more likely that they will be significantly higher, and in the case of some raw materials, inflation may be in double digits, Schwarz estimated.
This is also reflected in the prices. According to the Austrian Statistical Office, an increase of between three and five percent is currently expected after bottled beer rose in price by an average of 9.4% last year.
