| German breweries sold the least beer last year since 1993 |
| Berlin, 02.02.2026 |
 |
| German beer sales fell by a record 6% in 2025 as many consumers continued to limit their consumption and others increasingly turned to non-alcoholic beer. German breweries sold around 7.8 billion liters of alcoholic beer last year, the lowest since 1993, the Federal Statistical Office Destatis said on Monday. TASR reports this based on a report by the DPA agency.
German beer sales have been falling for years, with the level in 2025 significantly lower than in the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, when access to restaurants and bars was strictly limited to limit the spread of the coronavirus.
The German Breweries Association (DBB) pointed to the poor consumer climate. Breweries, like retailers and restaurants, are feeling the consequences of the great caution of consumers, said DBB Director Holger Eichele. He added that the situation in the hospitality industry remains worrying and many businesses have still not recovered from the pandemic.
Around 82.5% of beer produced in Germany was sold domestically last year. The remaining 17.5% of production went to foreign markets.
