EC to support states in the fight against short-term rentals
Brusel, 04.02.2026
The European Commission (EC) plans to support cities in the fight against short-term rentals, which sharply increase housing costs and lead to displacement of residents. However, services offered through online booking platforms such as Airbnb or Bookin also bring benefits, and therefore the Commission will not propose a ban on them, European Commissioner for Energy and Affordable Housing Dan Jorgensen said on Tuesday. TASR reports on this based on a report by the DPA agency. Europe is facing a housing crisis and millions of people are having trouble paying their bills, so "we must act now", said Jorgensen. According to him, the Commission will present a proposal later this year, which will, among other things, set criteria for defining areas with a tense housing situation. "For these areas, there will be a list of different tools that cities can use," added the European Commissioner. "We are not forcing cities to do something they do not want to do, but rather giving them the opportunity to address this problem," explained Jorgensen. He stressed that housing is primarily a matter for the Member States, and that the Commission has only limited influence in this area. "Having a home is a human right. If we do not address this, if we do not tackle these problems from the ground up, we risk undermining our democracy," the Commissioner concluded after meeting with Member State representatives in Brussels.odkaz na stránku
