| EC welcomes Serbia's entry into the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) |
| EU, 06.05.2026 |
 |
| The European Commission (EC) on Tuesday welcomed Serbia's entry into the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) system, which it said would enable faster and cheaper euro transactions for citizens and businesses in Serbia and other SEPA countries. The Brussels-based TASR correspondent reports.
The Commission noted that 18 banks in Serbia officially joined the SEPA system on Tuesday. This will make euro transactions between these banks and the European Union more reliable, faster and cheaper, potentially saving individuals and businesses up to €400 million. It will also simplify international transactions and facilitate cross-border trade for small and medium-sized enterprises.
The decision was taken by the European Payments Council (EPC), which is responsible for the development and implementation of SEPA payment schemes, after Serbia entered the geographical scope of SEPA in May 2025.
Serbia is the fifth EU enlargement partner country to join the SEPA system - after Albania, Montenegro, Moldova and North Macedonia.
According to the EC, this development highlights how gradual integration can bring concrete benefits to EU partners and their citizens well in advance of accession to the Union. The European Commission specified that it will continue to support this integration process, including through the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, which strengthens socio-economic ties with the Union, and by providing gradual access to certain areas of the EU single market.
SEPA is a European Union initiative that simplifies payments in euros between its member countries and allows for easy, fast and cheap money transfers within the 36 countries belonging to the SEPA zone. SEPA payments are free or have low fees, and payments are processed the next day.odkaz na stránku |
