| Radicova: This Coalition Won't Fall on Beer |
| Bratislava, 01.12.2010 |
 |
| Bratislava, December 1 (TASR) - The missing parts in tax revenues as a result of voting down of the proposed hike in excise tax on beer Wednesday will be filled using resources from the state budget's chapters under the administration of the coalition Christian Democrats (KDH), Prime Minister Iveta Radicova (SDKU-DS) announced after an ad hoc session of the Coalition Council.
It was four KDH MPs who in a parliamentary vote earlier in the day blocked the planned and agreed-on adoption of the new, more than 20-percent hike in the tax – a policy designed to replenish state coffers as of January.
KDH will have six months to submit their own proposal to tax beer at a higher rate, said Radicova. "This Coalition won't fall on beer," she asserted.
"I'm sad to see that the law was rejected with the help of some KDH lawmakers," said KDH caucus chairman Pavol Hrusovsky, adding that the three abstentions and one MP not voting reflects the individual opinions of four KDH MPs on this matter.
Hrusovsky rejected any allegations that a strong breweries' lobby could be behind the move of his colleagues. "Had I known that some MPs do have different opinion from what we'd agreed on, I would have asked to postpone the vote," he said.
