| Chinese vice premier, German chancellor pledge to deepen cooperation |
| Berlin, 07.01.2011 |
 |
| BERLIN, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said here Friday the two countries will jointly tap their great potential to deepen cooperation.
Li said his visit aims to implement the consensus reached by leaders of both countries and promote bilateral ties.
Li praised the achievements in bilateral relations last year, especially the huge bilateral trade volume, which accounted for nearly one third of that between China and the whole of the European Union (EU).
The two countries, with extensive consensus, helped each other in tackling the international financial crisis, which proved that China and Germany can be "reliable partners," Li said.
The Chinese leader believed that there is still great potential in deepening bilateral ties as well as their trade and economic cooperation.
Moreover, he urged both sides to ensure the success of the first China-Germany inter-governmental consultation, due to be held later this year, through "careful planning and close consultation."
Li also promised China's support to the unity, prosperity and stability of the EU during its current economic difficulties, saying that China is ready to work hand in hand with the European bloc to deal with the crisis, and achieve mutual benefit and a win-win result.
Meanwhile, the Chinese leader called for an end to all wars in the world, saying that peace should replace war, dialogue replace confrontation, and detente replace tension.
All problems should be solved wisely through equal consultation on the basis of mutual respect, Li said.
As the development of the world is characterized by the trend of multipolarization, diversification and democratization, countries of different political systems and development levels should treat each other as equals and respect each other's core interests and major concerns, he said.
Li briefed his host on China's development, attributing China's great economic and social achievements over the past three decades, its successful handling of the international financial crisis and a quick economic rebound to the country's adherence to the policy of reform and opening up, its adoption of a series of effective measures as well as the hard work of the Chinese people.
He stressed the importance of sticking to the reform and opening up drive and embracing fair competition in generating vitality and growth momentum.
He said China still faces many challenges and will push forward reforms to perfect its market environment.
For her part, Merkel spoke highly of the development of Germany's ties with China as well as China's achievements.
She said the Germany-China relations are very close and the two countries have achieved fruitful results in their cooperation in various fields.
Politically, both sides have maintained frequent high-level visits, leaders of both countries trust each other and maintain close cooperation in bilateral ties and international affairs, and various dialogue mechanisms are effective.
In trade and economy, enterprises of both countries have expanded cooperation and investment with great enthusiasm, Merkel said.
Culturally, Merkel applauded the successful ending of "Germany-China Moving Ahead Together," an event launched in 2006 to enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries.
The German leader believed that Li's visit will contribute to preserving the continuity of the Germany-China ties.
She said Germany is willing to hold dialogue with China in such areas as politics, economy, diplomacy, science and technology, environmental protection and social development through inter-governmental consultations, and will actively push for the EU's recognition of China's full market economy status.
During the meeting, Merkel also welcomed China's support for Spain and other EU countries in their fight against the European sovereign debt crisis, pledging that the European nations will firmly defend the euro and never retreat from the EU integration process.
Li arrived in Berlin Thursday for a four-day visit after winding up a trip to Spain.
He met with German President Christian Wulff on Friday morning. After talking with Merkel, he met German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and attended a signing ceremony of cooperation deals between the two countries.
He will later travel to Britain, the last leg of his three-nation Europe tour.
