| ZOCR Welcomes Initiative to Scrap Trading Relations Legislation |

| Bratislava, January 13 (TASR) - The Slovak Trade and Tourism Association (ZOCR) welcomes one of the Government's latest decisions - to scrap the law on inappropriate conditions in trading relations, a legal norm adopted by the previous government, ZOCR President Pavol Konstiak has told TASR.
"This law has brought no improvement in business practices. In fact, it had a negative influence on Slovak producers, because many of those who do business in the foodstuff sector actually had an easier choice - to buy food products in Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Food suppliers there weren't insisting on conditions like those in Slovakia did," Konstiak told TASR in response to the Government's decision on Wednesday to do away with the norm as of April.
According to Konstiak, in practice, businesses were seeking ways to get around the said law. "And they found such ways. In fact, the law on inappropriate conditions in trading relations was never set rolling," he said, adding that businesses viewed the law as a norm that deformed the business environment and the market.
When adopting the law in 2009, the then-government led by Robert Fico (2006-10) explained the need for such legislation by saying that there were ongoing problems between retail chains and their suppliers, with suppliers complaining about non-standard business practices applied by retail chains in contracts.
The current Government led by Iveta Radicova is repealing the law in order to see the "principle of contractual freedom" restored in the retail sector.
The initiative to scrap the law now has to be definitely decided on by Parliament.
