| EU-Serbia: EP wants remaining member-states to ratify deal |
| Brussels, 17.01.2011 |
 |
| (ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, JANUARY 14 - The EU-Serbia Association and Stabilisation agreement will be one of the issues to be discussed by European Parliament next week during the plenary session in Strasbourg. This agreement was signed in 2008, but since then only 11 member-states (Italy, Spain, Malta, Bulgaria, Estonia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Luxembourg, Hungary, Austria and Cyprus) have ratified it. This is why European MPs will most likely ask the remaining 16 states to do likewise.
The document reduces the trade barriers and represents a step towards EU accession for the Balkan nation. Before this vote, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Delic and Minister of European Affairs, will take part in a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee on Monday night. But for future membership to the EU for Belgrade, which presented its candidacy in December 2009, full cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia is still an essential precondition, with particular importance placed on the capture of the last two war criminals in hiding, Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic, the former head of the Bosnian Serbs and the former political leader of the Serbs in Croatia. Without prejudice to this condition, the council has asked the committee to prepare an opinion on Serbia's accession procedure in October 2010. (ANSAmed).
