| Eurostat: Most Slovak Households Composed of Several People |
| Brussels, 09.03.2011 |
 |
| Household of two and more people prevail in Slovakia, while childless couples make up the largest share in the EU as a whole, according to a survey released by Eurostat to mark International Women's Day.
The EU's statistics office processed data from more than 200 million households throughout the Union.
Out of 1.7 million Slovak households, almost one-third (32.5 percent) are composed of two adults who aren't a couple or three and more adults regardless of the number of children. Families with children live in 24.3 percent of dwellings, while childless pairs make up 19.4 percent, single mothers - 2.7 percent, and single fathers with at least one child - 0.2 percent.
In the EU as a whole, the most prevalent type of co-existence is relationships without children - 24.8 percent, followed by families with children - 21.5 percent. The highest ratio of single mothers is in Estonia - 7 percent, while the biggest proportion of fathers bringing up children without a mother can be found in Lithuania - 1 percent of all households.
Meanwhile, childless relationships are most common in Finland - 30.8 percent, while Cyprus heads the list when it comes to the ratio of families with children - 31.1 percent.
Eurostat has noticed a correlation between the number of children and women's employment. Only 53.7 percent of Slovak women work after giving birth to their third child, which is close to the European average (54.7 percent).
One interesting discovery is that in Lithuania, Portugal, Romania and Slovenia, mothers with one or two children are more likely to have jobs than childless women.
Eurostat also asked the respondents about how they view their own health. Slovaks are below the EU average, with 55.2 percent of men and 65.1 percent of women claiming that they feel fit. The European average stands at 65 and 71.1 percent, respectively. The most positive nation in terms of health are the Irish (83.3 and 85.8 percent), while the Portuguese, Latvians, Lithuanians and Hungarians are the most negative.
