| Putin orders faster Sakhalin-3 for Japanese demand |
| Novo - Ogaryovo, 15.03.2011 |
 |
| NOVO-OGARYOVO, Russia, March 15 (Reuters) - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin ordered officials on Tuesday to accelerate a Rosneft-led Sakhalin-3 oil and gas project to cope with future Japanese demand for energy.
Putin, Russia's paramount leader, said the power generation that Japan had lost due to a 9.0-magnitude earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster would have a long term impact on energy demand from Russia's eastern neighbour.
"It is obvious that this is a long-term loss of generation so we need to think how to speed up plans for developing hydro-carbon production including gas in the Far East, I have in mind the Sakhalin-3 project," Putin told senior officials.
"Think how to do this on our own and by attracting foreign partners," Putin told officials at his Novo-Ogaryovo residence outside Moscow.
Putin also ordered officials to check Russian nuclear facilities and to review the country's ambitious plans to develop atomic energy amid Japan's nuclear crisis.
Sergei Kiriyenko, the head of Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom, told Putin that Russian experts did not expect a nuclear explosion even under the worst possible scenario for the stricken Japanese nuclear plant.
Kiriyenko added that Russia's Far East was not threatened by the accident.
Russia, the world's biggest energy producer, has already said it may supply Japan with 200,000 tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG), or about two cargoes, as energy aid and may redirect some 6,000 megawatts of power.
President Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday that even though LNG volumes from Russia's Far East, Gazprom-led Sakhalin-2 -- the only country's LNG plant -- are already booked under long-term contracts, other buyers may be willing to allow Russia to divert their cargoes to Japan.
