| Slovakia is co-chair of the UN Security Council ad-hoc mechanism for mandate review |
| UN, 03.05.2006 |
 |
| The UN Security Council has entrusted the United States and Slovakia to serve as co-chairs of its ad-hoc mechanism for mandate review. The role of the co-chairs is to assess in detail all existing Security Council mandates older than five years and to propose to the Council abolition or amendments of those which are no longer valid or are duplicate or redundant.
Mandate review is among current priorities of the process of complex reform within the UN system based on the outcomes of the 2005 World Summit. It applies to three principal UN organs: the General Assembly (GA), the Security Council (SC) and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The process was formally launched in the General Assembly on March 30, 2006 by the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who introduced his report on UN mandating and delivering.
