Slovaks Living Abroad Meet in Bratislava to Mark Their Day
Bratislava, 06.07.2011
Around a hundred Slovaks living abroad gathered in Bratislava's Janko Kral Park on Tuesday. The meeting at the Memorial of Slovak Emigration was held to mark the Day of Slovaks Living Abroad, which falls on July 5, the same day on which the country commemorates the significance of the two Apostles of the Slavs - Saints Cyril and Methodius. "This is an opportunity to continue in the contacts between Slovakia and individual regions in countries in which Slovak compatriots live," noted Milan Vetrak, who chairs the Bureau for Slovaks Living Abroad. He added that relations between compatriots abroad and the country of their origin remain positive. Unlike last year, when only a small group of people came to the annual meeting at the memorial, hundreds of people were expected to attend this time. The foundation stone of the Memorial of Slovak Emigration was laid in Bratislava in the year 2000. The red marble stone is 3,000 years old and weighs 4.5 tonnes TASR
