Croatian parliament dissolved ahead elections
Zagreb, 28.10.2011
The Croatian parliament was dissolved Friday, paving the way for President Ivo Josipovic to call parliamentary elections, most likely for December 4, AFP reported. The Balkan state which is set to join the EU in 2013 was gearing up for elections in the throes of unprecedented corruption scandals involving the ruling HDZ party. The opposition, which boycotted the 153-seat assembly for the past two weeks following verbal spats with the ruling conservatives, took part in Friday's vote. A total of 135 deputies backed the decision to dissolve the parliament, which was formed in January 2008. Josipovic said earlier Friday that he would call regular elections "within a day or two." Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor had earlier announced elections for December 4 in the former Yugolave republic, which has been independent since 1991. Under Croatian law, elections must be held within two months after the assembly is dissolved. The HDZ has been seriously shaken both by major corruption charges against its former leader and former prime minister Ivo Sanader as well as a probe over alleged slush funds, used notably during electoral campaigns. Earlier Friday, the first corruption trial against Sanader was adjourned to next Thursday due to his heart problems. Opinion polls give a centre-left coalition led by the Social Democrats a convincing lead over the HDZ. FOCUS News Agency
