| Croatia to sign EU accession treaty on December 9: PM |
| Zagreb, 11.11.2011 |
 |
| roatia is to sign its EU accession treaty on December 9 at a ceremony in Brussels opening the door for the country to join the bloc in 2013, Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said on Thursday, cited by AFP.
"This is great news for Croatia, for the government and for me as a prime minister," Kosor said, quoted by the state-run HINA news agency.
Kosor said that the treaty would be signed by herself and President Ivo Josipovic.
The ceremony is to take place five days after general elections that, according to opinion polls, Kosor's conservative HDZ is likely to lose.
Konrad Niklewicz, spokesman for the European Union's Polish presidency, confirmed to HINA that the treaty would be signed on the sidelines of an EU summit, on December 9.
Croatia concluded its lengthy EU entry negotiations in June and is set to become the 27-nation bloc's newest member on July 1, 2013.
Before joining Croatia has to hold a referendum on EU entry, while the treaty has to be ratified by parliaments of all member states and Zagreb.
Slightly more than 50 percent of Croatians support EU membership, surveys show.
Croatia will be the second of six former Yugoslav republics to join, after Slovenia in 2004.
