The party Smer is the election’s clear winner.
Bratislava, 19.06.2006
The party Smer is the election’s clear winner. Few expected before the elections that the Smer’s high ratings in polls would materialize into such an election result. The fears that the reforms carried out by the outgoing right-wing government would take a toll on the parties’ popularity have not materialized. The SDKU fared much better than in the 2002 elections, and re-sults of SMK and KDH improved as well. These three parties have more seats in the parliament than Smer (65:50). The surprise of the elections is SNS – the radical nationalists ranked third. The new parliament will also include SMK, KDH and HZDS. Vladimir Meciar’s party saw the biggest voter failure. Traditional HZDS voters probably went to Smer and SNS. Turnout was just 54.7% (70% in 2002). Yesterday’s statements of party leaders regarding post-election cooperation were very cautious. Smer emphasizes that it wants left-to-center government. Its coalition with SNS and HZDS could bring many complications to Fico’s party. SDKU says that its priority is to continue in right wing polices, but the creation of a government in a three-bloc plus HZDS seems a little realistic. KDH seems to refuse any cooperation with HZDS, and its union with Smer is questionable as well. President Ivan Gasparovic will designate Robert Fico to form a new government today. Fico said he will start talks with all parties in the parliament, emphasizing that the talks can take many weeks.
