Denmark seeks to unify EU divisions
Denmark, 12.01.2012
Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt and European Commission Chief Jose Manuel Barroso have stressed the need for unity if Europe is to solve its debt crisis. Meeting in Copenhagen as part of the official launch to mark Denmark’s rotating presidency, Thorning-Schmidt claimed her government could act as a bridge at EU level. President Barroso also urged member states to pull together. “We need more coordination in the euro aera, but we can do it without undermining the basic principles of solidarity and unity among all the member states,” Jose Manuel Barroso said. The emphasis on unity follows last month’s divisive summit in Brussels to save the euro, which saw Britain walk away from talks aimed at forging a new fiscal responsibility pact. Although not in the euro, Denmark has promised to help draft the budgetary deal as part of its EU stewardship.
