US President George W Bush
Wienna, 22.06.2006
Wednesday, June 21, 2006 (Vienna): US President George W Bush has met senior EU officials at the EU-US summit being held in Austria. Bush began the day by meeting President Heinz Fischer and Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel of Austria, which holds the European Union's rotating presidency. Bush and Schuessel later joined EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso at a working lunch. The leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including trade, global energy security, climate change, the Middle East and Iran. EU unhapphy The summit has been overshadowed by European displeasure over the Guantanamo Bay prison, the continuing US-led campaign in Iraq and the alleged existence of secret CIA terror prisons in Eastern Europe. Fischer told Austrian media he had touched on the Guantanamo issue during his talks with Bush, saying the issue had dampened relations between the EU and the US. However, Solana was more outspoken about the controversial detention centre, voicing European demands for Washington to close it. "It's something that many Americans don't like, and we don't like it either. Although we have treated it as an anomaly, it has to end as quickly as possible," he said. The summit is being held under tight security cover owing to European public hostility towards American polices. (AP)
