| Romanian President nominates Victor Ponta for PM |
| Tirana, 28.04.2012 |
|
| Romanian President Traian Basescu has nominated leader of the opposition Social Democratic Party, Victor Ponta for the post of prime minister. He has been entrusted with forming a government for parliamentary approval.
This was announced by the Head of State after consultations with leaders of parliamentary parties. They started when parliament ousted Prime Minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu's two-month-old cabinet, against the backdrop of a wave of public anger over austerity plans and tax hikes.
This decision, resulting in the collapse of the ruling coalition, was voted for by 235 deputies.
The opposition Social Liberal Union that formed a new majority in parliament Friday, nominated Ponta for the post of PM.
