Romanian senate speaker takes over temporary presidency
Bucharest, 11.07.2012
The suspended Romanian President Traian Basescu Tuesday handed over his presidency to Senate Speaker Crin Antonescu, who is to serve as the interim head of state. "Romania's President, Mr. Traian Basescu, handed over the office of Romania's Presidency, July 10, 2012, to the pro tempore president, Mr. Crin Antonescu," read a press release issued by the Presidential Administration. Basescu left the Cotroceni Presidential Palace driving his Dacia Logan car, soon after the hand-over. Antonescu announced earlier Tuesday that he will empower his deputy Peter Philip to temporarily serve as the leadership of the Senate. Romania's Constitutional Court on Monday evening validated the impeachment decision of parliament against Basescu and confirmed the interim presidency of Antonescu. The parliament approved on Friday, by a vote of 256 to 114, the impeachment request against the president submitted by the ruling Social Liberal Union, a ruling alliance made up of the Social Democratic Party, the National Liberal Party and the Conservative Party. According to the Constitution, if the president is impeached, the Senate president will be acting president until the referendum which is to be organized in maximum 30 days so that Romania's people express their will on further keeping the head of state in his office or not. If the president is dismissed as the result of referendum which is to be held on July 29, Antonescu will serve as the interim Head of State until a new president be elected. Antonescu, 52, has been a Liberal member since 1990 and was elected party leader in 2009. He has been joint-chairman of the Social Liberal Union since February 2011, along with chairman of the Social Democratic Party Victor Ponta. On April 7, the Social Liberal Union adopted a resolution appointing Antonescu as candidate for the office of Romania's president. Antonescu was elected Senate President on Tuesday, when the Social Liberal Union replaced the presidents of the parliament's two chambers within a few hours. The union came to power in late April after a no-confidence motion toppled the 78-day-long center-right government led by former intelligence chief Mihai Razvan Ungureanu. The ruling alliance won most of the seats in local elections on June 10. Xinhua odkaz na stránku
