Special Christmas pensions.
Bratislava, 08.08.2006
By the end of this year the government wants to pay the first special Christmas pension to people with the lowest pensions. It will require Sk 1.7bn. Other goals that the cabinet wants to fulfill by the end of this year include the cancellation of healthcare fees (as of September). Along with the cancellation of the fees, however, the cabinet also wants to increase a contribution that socially dependent citizens received so far to compensate for healthcare fees (from Sk 50 to 60). Labor minister Viera Tomanova also submitted a proposal to increase other social benefits, such as increasing the activation contribution from the current Sk 1,700 to Sk 1,900 per month. The cabinet also wants to approve assistance for people commuting to work by train or bus. Unemployed who find jobs can already receive a travel allowance, which was introduced by former labor minister Iveta Radicova. In 1H of 2006 it was drawn by 2,823 people. As of 2007 other measures (i.e. reduced VAT rate) should also take effect. Finance minister Jan Pociatek says the government’s goals are realistic and will not endanger the adoption of the euro in January 2009. He says that budget savings of around 5-10% can be made on money that is currently used ineffectively.
