| Police Academy Senate Elects Stefan Kocan as New Rector |

| The academic senate of the Police Corps Academy on Friday elected Stefan Kocan to serve as interim head of the school following the corruption-related dismissal of Vaclav Krajnik in July, Vladimir Huska from the rector's office told TASR on Friday.
Of the 15 members of the senate present, 14 voted for Kocan, who had served as pro-rector for education and external relations.
The academic senate immediately sent an appointment request to the Interior Ministry. According to Huska, it is expected that Interior Minister Robert Kalinak could appoint Kocan as soon as on Monday. A more permanent rector should be elected in mid-September.
President Ivan Gasparovic dismissed Krajnik on July 26 over suspicions of manipulating entrance exams for the upcoming academic year and of receiving bribes.
Gasparovic acted on a proposal submitted by Kalinak. Earlier in July, the academic senate of the Police Corps Academy also recommended that Krajnik be dismissed. According to Kalinak, as many as one-quarter of the new students for the upcoming academic year were accepted in a fraudulent manner. The police have succeeded in gathering enough evidence concerning bribery totalling €5,000 in at least in two cases.
Krajnik, 65, isn't being held in custody. He initially confessed to the allegations but later retracted his statement. Krajnik became rector in January 2011 and is the first rector ever to be arrested in Slovakia.
The Slovak Police Corps Academy recently faced a scandal involving the awarding of academic titles under shady circumstances to Czech politicians Vit Barta and Jan Rytir.
