| TASR Posted Budgetary Surplus of €66,000 in 1H12 |
| Bratislava, 12.09.2012 |
 |
| The News Agency of Slovak Republic (TASR) posted a budgetary surplus of €66,396 in terms of its projected incomes and expenditures for the first half of 2012, TASR general director Jaroslav Reznik said during a semi-annual report presented to the parliamentary culture and media committee on Tuesday.
"When we compare the first half of 2011 with the first half of 2012, the first half of 2012 ended around 50 percent better," said Reznik.
TASR's incomes in 1H12 reached €1,696,071, which represented 46.34 percent of the yearly budget, with expenditures at €1,629,675, 45.17 percent of the annual budget.
In terms of overall incomes and expenditures, TASR was €92,868 in the red in 1H12. This result was €237,651 better than the one recorded in 1H11.
"We've significantly reduced the economic loss. Now, with a certain lapse of time, I would dare to say that we'll have positive economic results by the end of the year," said Reznik.
The agency's incomes in 1H12 dropped slightly year-on-year in the news web site segment, while other spheres were stabilised.
TASR in 1H12 released 124,134 multi-media stories, 73,104 text stories, 8,422 audio files, 39,434 photographs and 3,174 video stories.
Reznik added that the turn of 2011 and 2012 was a demanding period for TASR, which moved into new, one-third smaller premises, thereby reducing the agency's cost.
"Rationalisation in the aforementioned period was reflected in all available segments of the agency's economic results," said Reznik.
Despite a shortfall in the budget in 2011, the agency prepared a major project involving news web site www.teraz.sk. The web site has recorded more than 800,000 unique visitors and almost 7 million clicks over the past half year.
"The teraz.sk news portal has been a nice surprise for me. We achieved results that we expected around one year later," said Reznik. "We'll develop it further, while we're preparing other internet sites created at TASR," said Reznik.
The TASR head further pointed to the Android application, which became the most-frequently downloaded application in Slovakia shortly after its introduction. "This attests to the fact that TASR, with its verified and credible reporting, is able to attract new modern media users," said Reznik.
Meanwhile, if TASR receives a grant as part of the Operation Programme Society Informatisation, Priority Axis 2 - Development of Memory and Fund Institutions in response to an application submitted to the Culture Ministry, it will complete the digitalisation of its entire archive by 2017, making it accessible to the public, said Reznik.
