| Iran, world powers stand miles apart at nuclear talks |
| Alma Ata, 06.04.2013 |
 |
| Iran’s controversial nuclear program largely remains a pestering issue for world powers and the international community as they feel that if the Islamic Republic goes nuclear, safety and stability of the whole region would be at stake. Israel, neighbor of Iran, has also been pressing the world powers to take on the Islamic Republic and force it to halt uranium enrichment in better interest of peace and security in the world. However, there seems to be no imminent resolution of the issue. Iranian leadership is engaged in dialogue with the world powers to resolve the issue but as usual Iranian representatives don’t take meaningful interest in the negotiations.
The six world powers including the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany have been negotiating with Iran to reach a deal on the controversial nuclear program. However, the latest round of dialogue in Kazakhstan on Friday remained inconclusive as the Islamic Republic representative does not pay any heed to the world powers proposals to resolve the conflict. On the other hand, Iran has presented its own plan to resolve the decade-old crisis, completely ignoring the world powers proposals presented in February during a negotiations session. The world powers had offered modest sanctions relief if Tehran halts uranium enrichment. Iranian officials say that the world powers’ pressure on the country is unjust as it is their right to pursue the technology.
The world powers suspect that Iran has been trying to develop nuclear weapons under the garb of peaceful nuclear program. The world powers and intelligence agencies of different countries including the United States and Israel have reported significant enhancement in the Islamic Republic’s controversial nuclear program. However, Iran denies the charges. Iranian officials say the country is pursuing technology for medical purposes besides fulfilling increasing electricity needs of the country. Despite its claim for peaceful nuclear program, Tehran has never allowed nuclear inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to visit its nuclear sites despite the repeated requests by the organization.
The world powers including the United States have slapped economic sanctions against Tehran in a bid to force the country for dialogue on the issue. Indeed, the sanctions have helped bring Iran to the negotiating table but the resolution of the controversial nuclear program still remains far away. A number of analysts based here at New York City opine that Iran has only used the dialogue for time buying tactics as it never displayed sincerity to resolve the decade-old conflict. It is better for Tehran that it should not exhaust patience of the world powers and try to resolve the conflict through dialogue and negotiations. US President Barack Obama still wants to utilize diplomatic means to resolve the crisis.
