| Premier Enrico Letta issues call for 'United States of Europe' |
| Roma, 22.05.2013 |
 |
| Italy's prime minister Enrico Letta on Tuesday urged European Union states to pull together and deliver "concrete and tangible" strategies to achieve economic growth and employment or face "implosion".
"Either Europe becomes a 'United States of Europe' or it will end up in dead-end," Letta said in an address to the Senate upper house of the Italian parliament.
"Europe can no longer keep taking timid little steps and no decisions. It will implode unless it accelerates," Letta warned.
He was addressing the Senate ahead of a summit of European heads of state and government taking place in Brussels on Wednesday.
Energy policy and taxation are set to top the agenda at the meeting, which will also will review progress on deepening European monetary union.
"Monetary, political and economic union are not enough... Europe needs to do far more and better...to provide concrete and tangible growth policies," said Letta.
Leaders attending the EU summit are also expected to discuss EU competitiveness, growth and jobs.
Employment is a crucial priority for the bloc where states need to forge rules governing labour markets "as they have for public accounts," Letta told the Senate.
In recession-mired Italy, youth joblessness is running at around 40 percent - far above the national unemployment rate of close to 12 percent and rising.
"Immediately after Wednesday's summit I shall write to European Council president Herman van Rompuy to ask him for a summit centred on the fight against youth unemployment," Letta stated.
"This will give a sense of urgency to a drama that has sky-high social and political costs."
