Slovak-Argentinian talks on deepening cooperation
Bratislava, 30.05.2013
During the inter-ministerial consultations in Bratislava held today (May 29, 2013), State Secretary of the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry of the Slovak Republic Peter Burian discussed with Vice Foreign Minister Eduardo of Argentina Zuaín about the potential of developing cooperation between Slovakia and Argentina. Argentina is home to the most populous compatriot community in Latin America, said State Secretary Burian during the discussions. This is also a natural prerequisite and a good reason to search for opportunities for deepening the cooperation between our two countries – regardless of the geographic distance. Zuaín and Burian also found occasion to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the establishing of diplomatic ties between Slovakia and Argentina. Argentina was among the first countries to recognize the Slovak Republic as an independent state, State Secretary Burian recalled. They also agreed that bilateral relations between our countries politically are at a good level. However, there is still scope for further development mainly in joint projects and interaction in the economic and business spheres – with energy and agriculture mentioned specifically. New impetuses for cooperation in science and research will also be raised by the intergovernmental agreement under preparation. They also emphasized the need for cooperation at the regional level, and how the Visegrad Four seems to be a suitable format for the cooperation of Argentine with our region. The discussions also touched on the international and multilateral cooperation of Slovakia and Argentina. State Secretary Burian appreciated the dialogue with Argentina at the UN on such important topics such as, among others, UN reform – including the Security Council. They also appreciated the cooperation with Argentina in security sector reform, on which our countries jointly organized a seminar. Mutual support of candidacies at international organizations, cooperation in human rights and development aid were also broached at the meeting. They also agreed on beneficial effects of mutual cooperation towards the third countries, including transferring their transformation experiences to them. State Secretary Burian positively assessed the contribution of Argentina as an observer in the EU working group for the democratization of Tunisia: “This concrete cooperation serves as an example showing how the countries with different historic and political backgrounds can help a third country in terms of democratization processes.“ odkaz na stránku
