| NSA Surveillance Gets House OK, Even as Americans Balk |
| Washington, 25.07.2013 |
 |
| APThe U.S. House of Representatives narrowly voted down a bill Wednesday that would have limited the National Security Agency's data surveillance programs, in the wake of revelations about the programs following Edward Snowden's leaks. That proposal failed by a slim margin of 217 "no" votes to 205 "yes" votes, with both Democrats and Republicans split — and the vote cleared the way for the NSA to continue operating as it has been, with its sweeping surveillance programs intact. That vote came despite Americans' growing concerns about the government invading their privacy, more than a month after his leaks. Fifty-five percent of Americans say they worry the U.S. will go too far in violating their privacy, a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found. Snowden, meanwhile, isn't going anywhere just yet; he is still in the Moscow airport reading Russian literature while Russian authorities consider his temporary asylum request, his lawyer said Wednesday.
