Independence "opportunity of a lifetime," says Scottish leader
Aberdeen, Scotland, 12.04.2014
The referendum on Scottish independence planned for September is "the opportunity of a lifetime," Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Alex Salmond said Friday at the party‘s last conference before the vote. The poll would give Scots the chance "to take this country forward, to build and achieve the society we know we can be in Scotland, the prosperous, just society," the Scottish first minister told delegates in the city of Aberdeen. Scots are to vote on whether to end 300 years of union with the rest of Britain on September 18, with prominent supporters of independence including the likes of James Bond actor Sean Connery. Opinion polls by You Gov show the SNP‘s "Yes" campaign has slowly gained ground in the past months, increasing from 39 per cent in December to 42 per cent last month, while the "No" campaign has lost support. Meanwhile, Scottish Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon attacked the "No" campaign, saying it had failed to make a positive case for union and dubbing it "Project Fear." She also made a direct appeal for the support of Labour party voters, arguing that even though the majority of Scots voted for Labour in the 2010 election to parliament in London, the British government is a coalition of Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. The referendum "offers you the chance to get your party back - a Labour Party free to make its own decisions, no longer dancing to a Westminster tune," said Sturgeon. British Prime Minister David Cameron‘s Conservatives won just one seat in Scotland in 2010, leading to criticism that he is the wrong person to lead a pro-union campaign. The SNP has a majority in Scotland‘s devolved parliament in Edinburgh. odkaz na stránku
Foto : Scotland (/ˈskɒt.lənd/; Scots: [ˈskɔt.lənd]; Scottish Gaelic: Alba [ˈal̪ˠapə] ( listen)) is a country that is part of the United Kingdom.[11][12][13] Occupying the northern third of the island of Great Britain, Scotland shares a border with England to the south, and is otherwise surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean; with the North Sea to the east, and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the south-west. In addition to the mainland, the country is made up of more than 790 islands,[14] including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides.

Edinburgh, the country's capital and second-largest city, is one of Europe's largest financial centres.[15] Edinburgh was the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century, which transformed Scotland into one of the commercial, intellectual, and industrial powerhouses of Europe. Glasgow, Scotland's largest city,[16] was once one of the world's leading industrial cities and now lies at the centre of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Scottish waters consist of a large sector[17] of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union. This has given Aberdeen, the third-largest city in Scotland, the title of Europe's oil capital
