| “Colombia: a Country of Opportunities” |
| Bratislava, 22.11.2014 |
 |
| State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Peter Burian opened the Colombia: Country of Opportunities conference in Bratislava today (November 20, 2014). The conference is being organized by the Embassy of Colombia for the Slovak Republic (seated in Vienna) in cooperation with the Honorary Consulate of Colombia to the Slovak Republic and Hispanic-Slovak Chamber of Commerce. Held under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, the conference is aimed at increasing the trade exchange between Colombia and Slovakia – hence the conference was especially focused on representatives of the business world.
In his address, Burian appreciated the friendly relations and many similarities between both countries, recently attested to by a higher frequency of visits at the political level – providing a strong basis for further reinforcing economic cooperation. The current trade balance is growing approximately by 5% annually in favor of Slovakia and there is potential for its increase, especially in automotive and engineering industry, energy and information technologies. “This conference is one of the ways we can do the groundwork for our future cooperation,” stated the State Secretary.
Burian also emphasized the importance of direct contacts among businessmen and chambers of industry and commerce. There are also opportunities for cooperation at the V4 level and especially the implementation of the EU-Colombia Free Trade Agreement, which is currently going through the process of ratification. “Colombia is undoubtedly a country of opportunities and it is up to us how we seize them and what results this cooperation will bring. I would be pleased if we have opened a new, successful chapter of Slovak-Colombian relations through this conference,” said Burian.
