| Opportunities for developing cooperation with Asian countries |
| Bratislava, 06.12.2014 |
 |
| At the initiative of State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Peter Burian today (December 4, 2014), a meeting of ambassadors from Asian countries accredited to Slovakia (seated in Bratislava and Vienna) was held at the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry. The working lunch with ambassadors of India, Indonesia, South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Pakistan, Laos, and Sri Lanka took place in follow-up to a similar event organized by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic in February.
The meeting served as an opportunity to evaluate the activities of Slovakia in relation to the Asian continent countries over the past year, and especially to identify opportunities for further increasing the dynamics of this cooperation, whether bilaterally or from the position of the Slovak V4 Presidency, as well as at multi-lateral forums. The Asian countries are important EU trade partners, closely cooperating with the EU also at international forums and through regional groupings such as ASEAN and ASEM. Potential also lies within the realized or currently negotiated free trade agreements of these countries with the EU.
The State Secretary stressed that Slovakia recognizes the growth trend of the world economic activity eastward and tries to diversify its trade and commerce activities accordingly. This is also attested to by a higher frequency of bilateral visits of top representatives of the Slovak Republic to Asia. Slovakia is interested in reinforcing economic cooperation, especially establishing direct ties among entrepreneurs and carrying out concrete joint projects. There are potential projects involving several industries wherein Slovakia can provide added value. In doing so, it is important to identify sectors such as energy, energy efficiency, building infrastructure, water economy and food security that are prospective. “It’s high time that we discovered Asia as a partner also in new forms of cooperation like innovations, advanced technologies and realization of joint ventures in third country markets,” stated the State Secretary.
The ambassadors, together with the State Secretary, also agreed on the need for further developing mutual contacts in education, student exchanges, and university cooperation, as well as in tourism. As Burian said, Slovakia can provide Asian countries with quality education especially in technological fields. Slovakia used to have close cooperation in education with some Asian countries, and the communities of former students studying in Slovakia who hold prominent positions in their own countries nowadays can be excellent initiators and promoters of the cooperation with Slovakia today.
