National Convent workshop on cohesion policy outlining challenges for the Slovak Presidency in 2016
Bratislava, 13.12.2014
European Cohesion Policy will change and Slovakia can help determine how. This was agreed by the panelists of the first series of workshops on possible priorities of the Slovak Presidency in the Council of the EU in 2016. The workshop on the cohesion policy and regional development was held on Wednesday (December 10, 2014) at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic. The meeting was opened by State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Peter Javorčík and highlighted the importance of cohesion. “Slovakia belongs among the so-called cohesion countries and with the arrival of the new European Commission and its planned approximately 300-billion investment package, greater scope for interlinking the cohesion policy and the growth agenda, investments and competitiveness is being opened,” he said. Among the workshop panelists were Monika Smolková, Member of the European Parliament, Jozef Stahl, Advisor to Director-General of the European Commission, and Richard Brooš, an expert of the Permanent Representation of the Slovak Republic at the European Union. They discussed with MPs of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, representatives of the ministries, the private sector and non-governmental organizations on how the Slovak Presidency in 2016 can deal with the cohesion policy. The panelists pointed to the fact that 2016 will be of core importance for the cohesion policy. At that time, the European institutions will re-evaluate the cohesion policy set-up and will revise the EU multi-annual financial framework (budget) for 2014-20 and finally, they will discuss the post-2020 future of the cohesion policy. “The workshop was aimed at receiving inputs from the civil society on the themes to table during the Slovak Presidency,” said State Secretary Javorčík. The attendees also opened the issue of efficiency and transparency in drawing the European cohesion funds, as well as return or irreversibility of the assistance, or the link to macroeconomic indicators and budget rules. This cohesion policy workshop was the first out of the six planned on possible topics for the Slovak Presidency. They are being organized within the EU National Convent by the Center for European Affairs in cooperation with the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry. MZV
