Plan to help deprived citizens gains EU financing
Bratislava, 15.12.2014
Slovakia will receive from the European funds €55 million for food and basic material assistance for the most deprived people in the country. The European Commission approved on December 11 the Slovak operational programme to implement the new Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived (FEAD). The allocation from the FEAD will be complement by €7.7 million from national sources. Money was allocated for the period between 2014 and 2020, Andrej Králik of the European Commission Representation in Slovakia told SITA newswire. Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Mobility Commissioner Marianne Thyssen, said she warmly welcomes the FEAD programme for Slovakia which will offer the necessary resources to those who need it most. There, the fund will also provide food parcels and hot meals to the homeless. “The fund will also provide food obtained from gifts and packages with basic hygiene needs,” Králik said. The aid will go primarily to households that are dependent on social welfare benefits. FEAD was launched in January 2014 and provides non-financial assistance to some of the most vulnerable citizens of the EU. Overall the fund can distribute €3.8 billion over seven years. Its goal is to help meet the Europe 2020 ambition to reduce the number of poor or at risk of poverty and social exclusion by at least 20 million by 2020. The biggest group to receive the aid in Slovakia are families with young children – around 53,000 people, the Sme daily quoted the Labour Ministry. (Source: SITA, Sme)
