Office for Protection of Constitutional Officials staffer misused personal data
Bratislava, 07.01.2015
The Interior Ministry is investigating a case involving an employee of the Office for Protection of Constitutional Officials and Diplomatic Missions, who allegedly handed over someone’s data from the police system to debt recovery companies, TV Markíza reported on January 5. The person whose name was not revealed by Markíza allegedly downloaded data like birth ID numbers, car licence plate numbers and mobile phone numbers from the police database, and sent the data to former police officers working for debt-recovery companies. Markíza was informed about the case by an anonymous e-mail whose sender claims that the information acquired was misused against his family. The Interior Ministry subsequently confirmed that it has been investigating the case since the summer, with charges also having been pressed in the meantime, the TASR newswire wrote. The suspect still works at the Office and has not been officially charged, according to Markíza. Nevertheless, the person has been denied access to all police data systems, Interior Ministry spokeswoman Andrea Dobiašová said. The inspection of the Interior Ministry checks the motivation of the person’s steps and what he was doing with the information. It is hard to find out the extent of the misuse, as most of the people subject to it do not even know that data were collected on them. (Source: TV Markíza, TASR)Spectator
