| An end to a long roundabout in recognition of higher education documents |
| Bratislava, 28.02.2015 |
 |
| Exchanging the ratification instruments on the Agreement between the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic on Mutual Recognition of Equivalence of Diplomas of Education issued in the Slovak Republic and in the Czech Republic, signed in Prague, 28 November 2013, took place at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic today (27 February).
The last Friday of February has brought relief to a vast majority of Slovak students studying in the Czech Republic, and vice versa, to Czech students studying in Slovakia.
In practical terms this means that graduates from higher education institutions will not have to visit offices to have their education diplomas certified and wait for the document recognition and pay fees. Similarly, Slovak students who studied in the Czech Republic can continue their studies at a Slovak higher education institution without having to produce an education recognition document. Entering the acquired title in the identity card will also be easier since there will be no need to present a diploma recognition document.
“This agreement significantly helps to simplify the process of diploma recognition to citizens of both countries and in that way also the placement of these people in the labour market. Up until now people who wanted their Czech school diplomas recognized had to pay a fee of almost €100 but under the new agreement this duty has been lifted for a significant portion of graduates and that is important information for more than 20,000 Slovak students studying in the Czech Republic,” stated Miroslav Lajčák, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic.
Juraj Draxler, Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, equally welcomed the idea: “I am pleased that graduates from higher education institutions will not have to wait for two months on average for their document recognition, time when they could not start their jobs pending submission of their diplomas. The recognition system also covers students who completed elementary or secondary schools under the same conditions,” added the Education Minister.
The protocol of the exchange of ratification instruments was ceremonially signed by Livia Klausová, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Czech Republic to Slovakia, and by Barbara Illková, Director General of the Directorate General for Legal and Consular Affairs of MFEA SR.
The agreement regulates equivalence of education documents issued in one state that will be recognized as equivalent with no additional official procedure in the other state. The agreement becomes valid on 28 March 2015.
The agreement fully covers education for non-regulated professions such as economists and information specialists. The agreement does not cover recognition for the purposes of conducting a regulated profession such as physician, teacher and certain licensed trades. MZV |
