| New Slovak premises in Brussels for Slovakia’s presidency of the Council of the European Union |
| Brussels, 19.05.2015 |
 |
| Miroslav Lajčák, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, festively opened the new building of the Permanent Representation of the Slovak Republic to the European Union in Brussels today. The new premises were selected for the purpose of Slovakia’s presidency of the EU Council, which the country assumes on 1 July 2016.
“This will be the main base for our presidency, a sort of captain’s bridge from which we will co-manage the EU,” said Minister Lajčák during the opening ceremony. “Here will be the core premises for our operational activities of almost 190 diplomats and experts who will chair about a hundred working groups,” specified Minister Lajčák, adding that most of the work and tasks during Slovakia’s presidency will take place here.
The new building of the Permanent Representation of the SR to the EU has been rented for three years to serve the needs of the presidency. It has 12 levels and about 100 offices and also a media centre for journalists. The building has an interesting architecture and is one of the few triangle-shaped structures in Brussels, joining two streets, but not at a right angle. The rental was more cost-efficient than purchasing a new building. The old Permanent Representation building owned by the Slovak Republic is still in use but does not comply with the Belgian technical and safety standards and will undergo reconstruction during rental of the new offices
