| Slovakia’s initiative at the OECD |
| Bratislava, 17.06.2015 |
 |
| “Slovakia is a reliable and predictable partner and neighbour and will continue its activities to help Ukraine in the reform and stabilisation effort on both the bilateral and multilateral track,” stated Miroslav Lajčák, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, during Ukraine Day held, upon his initiative, in the premises of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris today (16 June).
“If we really want Ukraine to succeed in its reform effort we have to give it much stronger support than today. I am not speaking about more money. I am speaking about strategic assistance with reforms, about a vision and coordination that is apparently lacking today despite the indisputable effort on the side of the Ukrainian authorities,” stated Minister Lajčák.
The event, which was proposed by Minister Lajčák during his February visit to the OECD, and has been organized by the OECD upon his motion, was attended by Angel Gurría, Secretary-General of the OECD and Aivaras Abromavicius, Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine, the state secretaries of foreign ministries of the Visegrad Four countries, officials of international organizations and diplomats from the OECD member countries.
Minister Lajčák pointed out that the OECD has specific tools and expertise to assist in Ukraine’s modernisation, as well as lessons learned from Central Europe’s own transition experience, and can share this experience with Ukraine.
The aim of Ukraine Day was to discuss the status of reforms in Ukraine and opportunities for cooperation between various international organizations involved in the stabilisation and reform process in Ukraine.
“Back in February we already agreed that foreign assistance to Ukraine should be well orchestrated to make the best possible use of all the partners can offer to the Kyiv government. Today is the first step towards tighter cooperation between respective international organizations,” emphasized Minister Lajčák, while also highlighting that practical implementation of reforms is up to the Ukrainian authorities alone and reminded that the government should keep thoroughly explaining to its citizens the sense of the reforms, that in the short term they may hurt, but bear fruit in the longer term and the country and its people will benefit from them.
Before the beginning of the event Minister Lajčák held separate talks with Angel Gurría, the OECD Secretary-General, and with Aivaras Abromavicius, Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine, to discuss the status of reforms in Ukraine and current developments in the economic and security areas.
