| State Secretary discusses exchanges of young people and innovation with Japanese Ambassador |
| Bratislava, 24.06.2015 |

| “Slovakia wants to further develop high-level bilateral political dialogue with Japan. A specific contribution to this effort will be the planned visit by Miroslav Lajčák, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, to Tokyo before the end of this year,” said Igor Slobodník, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, in his discussion with Akio Egawa, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Slovakia, today (22 June 2015). One of the expected outcomes of the visit by Slovakia’s Deputy Prime Minister to Japan is signing a memorandum on working holidays that is intended to encourage the interest, particularly of young people, in visiting both countries.
The State Secretary also reiterated the ongoing interest in a visit to Slovakia by Japan’s Prime Minister, which would be the first trip to our country by a Japanese Prime Minister.
Special emphasis during the discussion was placed on the development of relations between Slovakia and Japan in the economic area. Japan is an important trade and investment partner for Slovakia, with Japanese companies ranking among the leading foreign investors and providing jobs to about 11,000 people in Slovakia. The newest example of a Japanese investment is the operation of Akebono Brake Industry, a supplier for the automotive industry, which is scheduled to be opened in Trenčín tomorrow.
State Secretary Slobodník also conveyed Slovakia’s specific interest in an influx of investment that, in addition to manufacturing capacities, will also bring research and science potential, stating that Slovakia perceives Japan as a leader in innovation and we are interested in continuing the already established events in the Visegrad Four (V4) region, including specific industrial seminars. In this regard, Slobodník appreciated the V4 and Japanese seminar on science and technology that took place in Tokyo on 11 March 2015.
The partners also briefly touched upon timely security challenges in both countries’ home regions. They evaluated last week’s security conference GLOBSEC which, for the first time, had a panel on security in North Eastern Asia on its agenda.MZV |
