| Just one year until Slovakia presides over the Council of the European Union |
| Bratislava, 02.07.2015 |
 |
| “The preparations for Slovakia’s presidency of the Council of the European Union have been progressing in line with the schedule,” stated Miroslav Lajčák, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, after a meeting of the government in Bratislava.
The cabinet has just approved establishment of the position of government plenipotentiary for the presidency and appointed Ivan Korčok, up until then the Permanent Representative of SR to the EU in Brussels, to the new position. The government also approved materials related to the programme that is being prepared for the 18-month presidency of the so-called Trio, three consecutive 6-month presidencies held by member countries, this time of The Netherlands, Slovakia and Malta.
The first Slovak presidency of the Council of the EU that will be assumed exactly one year from now is an unprecedented challenge for the foreign affairs ministry, for the government and for the entire country said Minister Lajčák. “At the same time, it is a great opportunity, and we will do all we can to make a full use of it,” added Minister Lajčák in front of the media as he presented a review of what has already been done within the preparations and what still needs to be done.
