V4 Ministers and their counterparts from Germany and Luxembourg discuss migration
Prag, 14.09.2015
Ways to address the migrant crisis were discussed today (11 September) in Prague by the Visegrad Four (V4) Foreign Ministers and their counterparts from Germany and Luxembourg, the country that is now holding the presidency of the Council of the European Union. Slovakia was represented in the meeting by Miroslav Lajčák, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic. “We are aware of the magnitude of the problem that we face and Slovakia is ready to take part in addressing it,” emphasized Minister Lajčák at the press conference. He called the climate at the deliberation constructive, friendly and open. “Addressing this crisis involves seven important aspects, and we were in agreement over six of them right away, including measures to strengthen the protection of EU’s external border, the policy of repatriating the unsuccessful asylum seekers and more intensive cooperation with the countries of origin of migrants. The opinion of the V4 countries and of their partners has remained different on the issue of mandated redistribution of migrants,” said Minister Lajčák. “However, I reject accusations that Slovakia and the V4 countries are not displaying solidarity. If someone requests a discussion of sustainable solutions and demands answers to legitimate questions, they do not display a lack of solidarity but rather they display responsibility,” emphasized Minister Lajčák, adding that this is exactly what Slovakia has been pursuing since the beginning of the European discussions of solutions to the migration issue. Minister Lajčák also pointed out that the migrant crisis is a humanitarian, political, economic and social issue but not an administrative one. “That exactly is why the solution to this issue cannot be an administrative one. We seek to find a solution that will not be forced but will be a joint outcome for coping with this crisis in a sustainable and lasting way. Slovakia has been and is prepared to be part of this kind of solution,” stated Minister Lajčák in Prague. The V4 Foreign Ministers, after discussions with their German and Luxembourg counterparts, adopted a declaration on the migrant crisis in which they stated that at this crucial moment Europe cannot be split over the challenging issue of managing migration. The V4 countries expressed full support for a jointly-agreed solution at the EU level and underscored the importance of a coordinated European approach.MZV
