China, Japan, South Korea to Hold Summit This Year
Tokyo, 16.10.2015
Japan and China confirmed Wednesday that they would hold a trilateral summit including South Korea, in the latest sign of improving ties between Tokyo and Beijing. The summit among Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and South Korean President Park Geun-hye is expected to take place in Seoul later this month or early next month. The meeting was discussed during talks Wednesday between Mr. Abe and visiting Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi, a senior official in charge of diplomatic policy. The three countries most recently held a trilateral summit in May 2012. They were later suspended due to disputes over wartime history and a row between China and Japan over uninhabited islands in the East China Sea, called the Senkakus in Japan and the Diaoyu in China. Despite frequent verbal sniping, especially over Japan’s wartime history, relations between Tokyo and Beijing have shown signs of thawing this year. Beijing is faced with a slowing economy and growing efforts by the international community to respond to its aggressive backing of territorial claims in the South China Sea. Messrs. Abe and Yang didn’t discuss the South China Sea, according to a Japanese official. Mr. Yang said China would as soon as possible establish lines of communication, including a hotline between the two nations’ air and naval chiefs, to prevent unintended clashes. Mr. Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to this in Beijing last November. Mr. Yang said Japan and China, as the region’s two largest economies, should cooperate more, noting that China would send a large business delegation to Tokyo next month. Mr. Abe is hoping to hold separate bilateral talks with Ms. Park. The leaders haven’t held a formal two-way meeting since they took power in their respective countries.
