| British proposals for EU reform must be beneficial to all EU member states |
| Bratislava, 24.10.2015 |
 |
| Ivan Korčok, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, visited London on 21 and 22 October 2015 and held talks with his British counterpart, David Lidington, Minister of State at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, serving as Minister for Europe, with Lord Boswell of Aynho, Chairman of the European Union Committee of the House of Lords, and with Mats Persson, European Union Adviser to the Prime Minister. “Slovakia wishes that Britain stays a member of the Union. Slovakia supports Britain’s demand for the completion of the single market. The single market, however, can only work as long as all four freedoms concerning free movement, including the free movement of persons, are ensured and consistently complied with,” emphasized State Secretary Korčok.
The talks focused on timely European issues including migration as well as especially on the process of preparations for the referendum on the United Kingdom’s EU membership and the related discussion of the possibilities of reform of the European Union.
The preparations for and priorities of Slovakia’s Presidency of the Council of the EU and the situation in Ukraine were also discussed.
The partners reiterated the good standard of bilateral relations and the dynamically developing cooperation, as attested to by the recent visit by Prime Minister David Cameron to Slovakia and the visit by the President of SR Andrej Kiska to the United Kingdom. “I am very pleased that Minister Lidington accepted our invitation to Bratislava and that he will participate in the Tatra Summit conference at the beginning of November where we will have an opportunity to continue our discussions of the proposals for EU reform. I can see potential especially in the area of increasing the competitiveness of the EU and the completion of the single market,” said the State Secretary MZV |
