| Making specific cooperation between Slovakia and Uruguay more intensive was agreed in Montevideo on Tuesday by Raúl Sendic, Vice President of Uruguay, and Miroslav Lajčák, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, who is the first member of the Slovak government since the Slovak Republic was founded to visit Uruguay.
“Our contacts make sense and are logical since we are countries of similar size and also with similar principles and attitudes to global issues,” stated Minister Lajčák in his meeting with Vice President Sendic. In the discussion he emphasized Slovakia’s interest in deepening cooperation with Uruguay, namely in the political and economic areas as well as in the fields of education, science, innovation and technology.
An expression of mutual interest in deepening the relations is the Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation between the Foreign Ministries of Slovakia and Uruguay that was signed by Minister Lajčák and Eduardo Bonomi, the Interior Minister and acting Foreign Minister.
“This document presents the fundamental framework for bilateral cooperation and is a springboard to the preparation of more agreements in specific areas,” said Minister Lajčák and proposed to his Uruguay partners to focus now on the preparation of essential economic agreements such as an agreement on prevention of double taxation.
Minister Lajčák then focused his discussion with Interior Minister Bonomi on security sector reform and asked him to consider Uruguay possibly joining Slovakia’s activities under this agenda within the United Nations. Uruguay has direct experience in this subject as it provides the highest number of soldiers and police for the UN’s peace-keeping missions, expressed as percentage of the country’s population, of all Latin American countries.
In his talks with Vice President Sendic, Minister Lajčák also raised the issue of closer regional cooperation under the Visegrad Four Plus format or through integration groups of the two continents, namely the European Union and Mercosur. The EU is the largest investor in Uruguay and the third largest commercial partner of the country. The Union has also been finalizing preparations for an Association Agreement with Mercosur.
Minister Lajčák and Vice President Sendic, who is the second highest executive official under the presidential system of the Republic of Uruguay, also discussed developments in Latin American countries, foreign policy issues and timely global challenges and agreed that complying with existing international rules is the fundamental prerequisite for maintaining stability.
Minister Lajčák, during his short visit to Montevideo, also officially opened the honorary consulate of SR in Montevideo, led by local business leader Matías Balparda.
Miroslav Lajčák will continue his Latin American tour, holding talks with Peruvian partners in Lima on Wednesday, October 28.MZV |
