Slovakia-Peru: Revising their contractual basis to start more intensive cooperation
Lima, 30.10.2015
Slovakia and Peru have ended the process of reviewing their bilateral agreements regulating relations between the countries. During his official visit in Lima, Miroslav Lajčák, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, and his departmental counterpart, Ana María Sánchez de Ríos, signed an intergovernmental protocol on revision of the contractual basis that will allow launching cooperation of new and higher quality. The signing took place during the first ever visit of a member of the Slovak government to Peru. “Slovakia and Peru traditionally have good relations free of pending issues. We consider Peru as a partner with similar views and attitudes and we see significant potential for more profound mutual cooperation that we would like to advance,” stated Minister Lajčák during the talks with his departmental counterpart. He reiterated Slovakia’s interest in intensifying political dialogue and in engaging in mutually beneficial cooperation in economic, commercial, cultural, science, research and education areas. Minister Lajčák stated that new opportunities for mutual commerce and investment are also presented through the Association Agreement between the EU and Peru (Slovakia ranked among the first EU member states to ratify it) as well as through the planned lifting of the visa requirement for citizens of Peru. In the talks with Foreign Minister Sánchez de Ríos they also exchanged views on timely issues and developments in Latin America and in the EU. Minister Lajčák highlighted that both formations have already successfully cooperated in several areas such as coordinating the struggle against climate change, issues of security and combatting narcotics trafficking. That, in the minister’s opinion, has also created good prerequisites for more intensive bilateral cooperation between Slovakia and Peru. Minister Lajčák also met with Pedro Cateriano, President of the Council of Ministers of Peru (the government of Peru), and they specified that tighter Slovak-Peruvian contacts could be started in the area of academic exchanges and scientific and research activities. “After the signing of the protocol on revision of the contractual basis, now experts from both parties should meet and work on the details of the conclusions from today’s political negotiations,” emphasized Minister Lajčák. Minister Lajčák, during his talks in Lima, also formally requested observer status for Slovakia with the Pacific Alliance, presided by Peru since July. The Pacific Alliance is a regional union of Colombia, Mexico, Chile and Peru that has been seeking deeper integration to create space for free trade and to ensure freedom of movement of goods, services, capital and people. “We have been watching very attentively the successful development of this ambitious and dynamic group that represents more than one third of the Latin American population and we are interested in establishing mutually beneficial cooperation also under the Visegrad Four format,” stated Minister Lajčák. With regard to wider regional cooperation, he added that Slovakia supports the discussions for concluding a strategic partnership between the European Union and The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). At the conclusion of his short stay in Peru, Minister Lajčák festively opened a branch of the Slovak software company ESET in Lima. With significant interest from local media, Minister Lajčák cut the inauguration ribbon in the new premises accompanied by Federico Perez Acquisto, Director General of ESET for Latin America, and Jorge Zeballos, Manager General for Peru. ESET has been successful globally and has a regional center for Latin America in Buenos Aires, Argentina and now has expanded with its new branch in Peru.MZV
