| British preparations for referendum on EU membership |
| Bratislava, 05.11.2015 |
 |
| Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Miroslav Lajčák received British Minister of State at the Foreign Office serving as Minister for Europe David Lidington in Bratislava 4.11.2015
They talked over the UK preparations to hold a referendum on its future in the European Union. Minister Lajčák was interested in the steps required to organize this vote, as well as the reforms in the functioning of the EU that Britain is calling for.
Minister Lajčák emphasized that Slovakia endorses the initiatives directed at increasing the effectiveness and competitiveness of the EU.
He also expressed the readiness to approach the entire process as constructively and pragmatically as possible when Slovakia chairs the Council of the European Union. One of possible dates of the British referendum falls exactly during our half-year Presidency (in the latter half of 2016).
Lidington came to Slovakia to attend the ongoing Tatra Summit. His visit and talks with Minister Lajčák attests to the high intensity of bilateral UK-Slovak contacts this year - with UK Prime Minister David Cameron visiting Bratislava in the first half of 2015 and then Slovak President Andrej Kiska visiting the UK.
