Bratislava, 12.02.2016
Bilateral Slovak-American relations and current migration crisis were issues, Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák and US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Hoyt Brian Yee spoke about on February 11 in Bratislava. They also discussed the situation in Ukraine and the other countries of the Eastern Partnership and the latest developments in the Western Balkans, the TASR newswire reported. Lajčák noted the strong partnership between Slovakia and the USA and reiterated Slovakia’s interest in intensifying political dialogue at top levels. With respect to Ukraine, he emphasised the need for stability and unity of the governing coalition and for the reforms to continue. The two sides agreed to continue supporting Ukraine on its way to modernisation and Europeanisation. They also spoke about Belarus and its role in relation to the EU in the context of European geopolitical developments. Lajčák told Yee about the preparations for the Slovak presidency of the EU, and described Slovakia’s priorities in relation to its presidency. The duo also discussed energy security in view of the controversial Nord Stream 2 project of the new gas pipelines which will increase capacity along the Baltic Sea route from Russia to Germany bypassing Ukraine as well as Slovakia. Slovakia views this as going against the EU’s interests and its energy goals. Spectator
