| Slovakia is predominantly rural country. The objective of the Slovak Government´s policy is to support rural development and improvement in the living conditions of the rural population. The Government therefore recognises agriculture, food and forestry as strategic sectors of the state´s economic policy with irreplaceable role in the structure of the economy. The Government sees the agro-food industry, primary forestry production, wood processing and farming in rural areas, as a significant supporting platform for the employment policy and as a potential partial instrument for addressing long-term unemployment. The Government also realizes that these sectors are facing increased pressures of globalisation and, in many cases, upredictable market turbulences. This is manifested by a chronically negative trade balance in agricultural and food commodities..
