State Secretary of the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry Lukáš Parízek received a delegation of members of the US Congress visiting Slovakia at the end of their European tour of Germany, Sweden and the Czech Republic yesterday (4 August).
Delegation members Louie Gohmert, Doug Collins, Mike Bishop, Richard Hudson on behalf of the Republicans and Scott Peters and Sheila Jackson Lee for the Democrats were led by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte. They mainly discussed the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU, cooperation within NATO, EU-US relations, energy, developments in Ukraine and in Syria, relations with Russia, China and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).
The State Secretary told them about the successful course of the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU so far, and introduced them to its priorities. In the context of the referendum in Great Britain, he confirmed that in September Bratislava will host an informal summit of prime ministers and presidents of 27 EU member states. “We need to openly discuss what the European Union could and should look like,” Parízek said.
Parízek expressed Slovakia’s support for reinforcing NATO’s presence on its eastern wing, and that Slovakia will send soldiers to the Baltic nations on a rotating basis as of 2017. He also confirmed Slovakia’s resolve to continue in the implementation of the national commitments in security, including the rise in defense spending.
During the talks, they also delved into the current situation in Ukraine. “The Slovak Republic supports a peaceful solution, which should emerge from the diplomatic dialogue with Russia. Communication channels must remain open,” stated Parízek, who expressed his conviction that isolating Russia will not move us closer to resolving this complicated situation. During the talks the US guests also touched on energy security issues and Nord Stream 2 (NS2). As part of his response Parízek thanked the US Congress for its initiative in supporting Slovakia’s negative stance on this project.
