Slovakia-Egypt: More intensive contacts and deeper cooperation
Cairo, 30.08.2016
Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Miroslav Lajčák, visited Egypt where he held talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, Sameh Shoukry, and the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States (LAS), Ahmed Aboul Gheit, on Sunday. Minister Lajčák’s talks in Cairo focused on bilateral Slovakia-Egypt cooperation, and as an official from the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, he also discussed Egypt-EU relations, the situation in the Middle East and Africa, the migrant crisis and the fight against terrorism. Minister Lajčák and his Egyptian departmental counterpart Shoukry ended their joint deliberations by signing a Slovakia-Egypt Agreement on Cooperation in the area of science, education, culture and sport. Signing the agreement, according to Minister Lajčák, expresses the interest of both countries in deepening the existing amicable relations and reflecting them in other specific areas. Cooperation in the area of education and culture in particular has the potential to promote understanding between both countries and their citizens through practical activities and cultural and study exchanges. Minister Lajčák also noted that the signing of this agreement attests to the determination to make the dialogue between Slovakia and Egypt more intensive, just like he suggested during his previous visit in Cairo at the end of March this year. In discussions with LAS Secretary-General Gheit, Minister Lajčák focused primarily on the situation in the troubled countries in the Middle East and Northern Africa where the developments and resulting problems have significant impact on the region’s stability and go beyond its borders, especially with regard to Syria, Iraq and Libya. Minister Lajčák emphasized in that respect that the EU just like the LAS face the outcomes of those developments, such as the migrant crisis and the increase in terrorism, and for that reason they should intensify their mutual contact and boost their mutual cooperation in addressing these challenges. During his stay in Cairo, Minister Lajčák also visited the children’s oncological hospital No. 57357 where he presented a €10,000 symbolical check to support cancer treatment. This hospital ranks among the most successful projects of the Egyptian health care system and is financed solely with donations. The hospital provides health services to children from all of Egypt and from Middle East and African countries and achieves a treatment success rate higher than 70 percent. Since June the hospital has been using a donated medicinal oxygen-generation unit whose equipment and technology was supplied by Oxymat Slovakia. 28.08.2016 odkaz na stránku
