| It is a great pleasure for me to represent Canada in Austria and in Slovakia. Our three countries share many common values and interests – not only bilaterally and internationally but also on the level of family ties and personal friendship.
Canada enjoys excellent relations with both Austria and Slovakia, based on our common support for human rights, democratic development and a strong commitment to building peace and security. We work closely together in the United Nations and other organizations such as the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Slovakia’s case and with Austria as a member of NATO’s Partnership for Peace. All three countries also share a dedication to preserving our respective natural heritage and to engaging in sustainable and innovative economic development.
Our relations are also enhanced thanks to both Austria’s and Slovakia’s membership in the European Union, which has strengthened relations with Canada in many areas in recent years: foreign policy, science and technology, trade and investment promotion. Most recently, negotiations were concluded on the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement that will significantly boost trade and investment ties between Canada and EU countries, and will create jobs and opportunities for Europeans and Canadians alike. The Canada-EU Trade Agreement is the most ambitious trade agreement that either Canada or the EU have ever concluded, and it is the first such agreement the EU has concluded with a G7 partner.
Our ties grow daily: Austrian, Slovak and Canadian firms forge partnerships; artists of all kinds perform and display their creations; exchange students, interns and researchers learn and work together; young people benefit from bilateral programs between Canada and Austria and between Canada and Slovakia, gathering valuable job experience facilitated by work permits under the “International Experience Canada” programs.
