Minister Lajčák in Vienna: “Answers to challenges require a joint European approach rather than attempts for individual solutions” |

The United Nations should be more visible and successful in conflicts than it is right now. Conflict prevention and mediation of existing disputes must hence be a priority for the UN operation in the forthcoming period. We just have to move ahead in this regard. This was said by Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Miroslav Lajčák, at today’s (26 July) informal meeting with officials from various organizations and institutions resident in Vienna that was organized by the UN Under-Secretary-General, Serge Brammertz.
“I will be pleased if during the 72nd UN General Assembly we manage to move ahead the implementation of the SDGs, achieve an agreement on the first broad-spectrum compact for migration, and strengthen observation of human rights; all of which are themes that are crucial to sustainable peace and security, which is our absolute priority,” noted Lajčák during the discussion and presentation of his priorities in his office as the next President of the UN General Assembly. The priorities, inter alia, also include reviving people’s interest and recovering their trust in global issues, pursuing equity, dignity and freedom for all, maintaining development dynamics and implementing actions to counter climate change. “If we want to arrive at palpable results, the first thing we need to do is listen to each other and build bridges among all stakeholders. Regardless of how demanding dialogue may be, the priority is problem solving in a peaceful way,” said the minister.
The invited guests, including the ambassadors of Germany and Israel to Austria, wanted to know more about the minister’s view of developments within the European Union. Lajčák highlighted the importance of continuing the discussions of the future of the EU that at present, lamentably, are going on at bilateral and regional forums rather than at the Pan-European level. “The future of the European project must lean on approximation within the economic, currency and social areas. I can say on behalf of Slovakia that we stand behind the project of a common EU and reject decentralizing tendencies. We see no better alternative within Europe than pulling at the same rope. After all, the results the Union has achieved so far, especially in the economic area, say more than words. The EU is a successful project and wasting its potential would be a tremendous pity,” stated the minister, while concurrently underscoring that we must not turn a blind eye to challenges facing the EU, especially in its internal and external security areas, in combatting terrorism and also the wave of populism in various member countries. “The answers to these challenges require a joint, meaning European, approach rather than attempts for individual solutions,” concluded Minister Lajčák.
